Latest Musical Discoveries

My boredom has given me the chance to sample some new music. Here are a few good songs that I've stumbled across:

Actually, this song isn't a new find, but it's one that I can't get over so I decided to add it anyway...

The Bittersweets

Hanah Prater (lead singer) has one of those voices that you'll instantly fall in love with. It's pure, sweet, simple, and resembles the style of Alison Krauss or Karin Bergquist (of Over the Rhine). The Bittersweet's album, The Life You Always Wanted, contains an even mix of upbeat folk-pop and downtempo americana music. It's an easy album to listen to the whole way through!

My personal favorites from this album: Bag of Bones, When the World Ends

Five For Fall

~~Five For Fall - Playlist~~
Nick Drake - Place to Be
Cheryl Bliss - Sweet
Laura Veirs - Galaxies
The Weepies - World Spins Madly Around
Gran Bel Fisher - Crash & Burn

A little more about the artists:
(Click on the album icons to buy the music!)
  • Nick Drake is an English singer-songwriter acoustic, autumnal songs. Nick has battled with depression, insomnia, and shyness, which are often depicted in his lyrics.
  • Cheryl Bliss' electic-pop music is described as atmospheric and ethereal. She's compared to artists like Kate Bush and Julee Cruise.
  • Laura Veirs is a singer/guitar player who's created all genres of music. She's now mainly creating folk-rock, with her own intimate tone and impressionistic lyrics.
  • The Weepies (Deb Talan and Steve Tannen) are both independent singer-songwriters that combine their talents to make beautiful folk-pop music. Really Rather Reviews-UK describes their music as “sparkling jangle-pop nailed to perfection”.
  • Gran Bel Fisher incorporates themes of life, love, and death to create passionate, soulful music. This combined with his powerful and mellifluous voice, contributes to a unique and personal style.

Holly Brook

Holly began performing with her mother at the young age of 6. By the time she was 15, she had already helped create 3 indie-folk albums. She moved to LA in 2003 and teamed up with Grammy Award Winning Jon Ingoldsby (who's worked with artists like Madonna and Elton John!). Holly claims that her main musical inspiration is Joni Mitchell because she performs music that explores beyond the normal realm of contemporary pop music. Holly signed with Linkin Park's label, Machine Shop Recordings, and produced Like Blood Like Honey earlier this year. My personal favorites on the album are "Wanted" and "Still Love".

Holly is described as having sultry vocals and poignant lyricism that documents her life’s trials, tribulations, and triumphs into lyrics that are at once strikingly personal, yet universally appealing (according to musicremedy.com). She boasts a young and appealing voice, best described as Fiona Apple if she underwent anger management — or an edgier, darker Sarah McLachlan.

Cat Power

Cat power (aka. Chan Marshall) spent most of her childhood moving from place to place in the southern U.S. She dropped out of high school and began performing in Atlanta. She eventually moved to New York and opened for Liz Phair in 1994, which jump-started her music career. On that tour, she met Sonic Youth drummer (Steve Shelley) and Two Dollar Guitar's Tim Foljahn and they agreed to be her backing band. She immediatley started recording music. After releasing her first two albums, she took a break from the music scene for a while. Cat had planned to permanently retire, but had a nightmare one night which provided as musical inspiration. That sleepless night led to the creation of the album, Moon Pix. Cat has toured off and on over the past few years and released her most rececnt album, The Greatest, earlier this year.
